Why
did we decide to produce this family-oriented festival?
- Census Bureau data shows that the Hispanic population
is now the largest minority nationally (at 42 million). In the area, the population
grew almost +30% just since 2000; many believe it grew much more as evidenced
by the increasing penetration of Hispanics in many industries like construction
and service industries.
- With steps taken like the City of Cincinnati
accepting "matricula" cards for identification, and with the potential
guest worker legislation proposed by President Bush, the explosive growth is likely
to continue and perhaps even accelerate. With that growth comes needs, some of
which are unique, like language, and which the community-at-large has not had
to deal with hitherto. At the same time, this is an opportunity for many in the
community-at-large to learn about a new culture and people, and what they can
contribute to the community as they have in many other parts of the country.
- Net, in this environment, it serves both the total community as
well as the local Latino community to proactively work to find ways to successfully
bring in this group into our community. This project is one such step in that
process.
