Snack your way through Cincy-CincoBY POLLY CAMPBELL | PCAMPBELL@ENQUIRER.COM A Fiesta del Pueblo, a town party that can last a week, is a tradition in Latin America. It starts with a religious event and then, like town parties all over the world, includes dancing, music, food, games for kids and strolling around. Cincinnati will have its own Fiesta del Pueblo at Cincy-Cinco, the celebration of Cinco de Mayo being held Saturday and Sunday at Coney Island. The fiesta is a chance for the area's Latinos to celebrate the cultures of their countries along with non-Latino neighbors. Of course there's food - and the selection goes well beyond tacos. This year the emphasis is on botanas, the large category of snacks of which every Latino cuisine has examples. Santo Domingo Restaurant in Hamilton will bring snacks from the Dominican Republic, including its version of empanadas, along with plates of pork, yucca and rice with black beans or pigeon peas. Owner Yamile Alzaro says the restaurant's food is Caribbean and has a lot in common with Puerto Rican and Cuban food. El Pollon Restaurant in Fairfield will serve its specialty, a crispy Peruvian roasted chicken with roast potatoes. There will be steak tacos, churros, gorditas (fat cornmeal cakes), tortas ahogadas (chile-covered sandwiches) and raspados (like snow cones) from Mexico; piononos (cheese-stuffed plantains) and anticuchos (skewered meat) from Peru; empanadas (meat turnovers) from Colombia; and more. "We don't want people to spend their money on one burrito," says festival organizer Alfonso Cornejo. "We want them to buy lots of little dishes, so they can try something new." Are you a foodie?
